kayak is the best! you watch the flights fall as search all the major search engines/airlines- but i definitely noticed the spike as well - was gonna hit vegas for a weekend, but flights are like totally expensive

Why don't you research Student Advantage I use it to get discounts for my bus tickets but I know that they also give discounts for airfare and many other thing for example entertainment, clothing, and technology at places like target and amc theaters.
There is an awesome website for students to get really cheap tickets. It's studentuniverse.com. I have used this many many times going home for the holidays. The ticekts are so much cheaper!!
